From Middle English happy ‎(“fortunate, happy”), perhaps an alteration of Middle English happyn, happen ‎(“fortunate, happy”), from Old Norse heppinn ‎(“fortunate, happy”); assimilated to be equivalent to hap ‎(“chance, luck, fortune”) +‎ -y.
